Specialist Healthcare Training
Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression — specialist training for healthcare and care professionals.
About PMVA Training
PMVA training equips participants with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to safely manage challenging situations in healthcare and care settings. It is designed to protect both service users and staff while maintaining a safe, therapeutic working environment.
Rooted in evidence-based techniques and aligned with current UK regulations and NHS guidance, the programme covers everything from early warning recognition and de-escalation through to post-incident support and recovery.
Audience
This course is suitable for anyone working in environments where challenging behaviour may occur. No prior PMVA qualification is required.
Course Content
Each module combines theory with practical application, building from foundational principles to hands-on scenario work.
Core principles of PMVA, the legal and ethical framework governing physical intervention, and staff duty of care responsibilities.
Types and triggers of aggression, underpinning psychological factors, and structured risk assessment approaches.
Verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies, active listening, and evidence-based conflict resolution techniques.
Identifying and responding to high-risk situations, safe working practices, and incident reporting obligations.
Safe restraint methods, correct moving and positioning, and minimising risk of harm to service users and staff.
Structured debriefing practice, accurate incident recording, and practical approaches to supporting colleagues after a difficult event.
Realistic simulations drawn from frontline healthcare settings. Participants apply skills from all previous modules under trainer observation and receive structured individual feedback to consolidate learning.
How We Deliver It
All PMVA training is delivered face-to-face by experienced practitioners, combining interactive instruction with practical application.
Facilitated group sessions that encourage discussion, shared learning, and real-world application of theory to familiar workplace scenarios.
Hands-on practice of de-escalation techniques and — where appropriate — safe physical intervention in a controlled, supervised environment.
Structured role-play situations replicate real incidents across mental health, social care, and acute settings, building participant confidence before they are tested in practice.
Participants who successfully complete all modules receive a certificate recognised across UK healthcare and care settings, suitable for CQC inspection evidence.
We deliver on-site to care organisations across the UK. Group and individual bookings accepted.
