This qualification allows you to develop your managerial and care skills and is therefore ideal for those looking to become managers of adult residential and domiciliary services.

Typically people taking this qualification will be working in the health and social care sector either as managers of the provision or as senior practitioners including assistants and deputy managers.

This is a competency based qualification and evidence is gathered by the candidate as they undertake their normal work role. This will form the basis for their portfolio. The evidence must reflect policies and procedures of the work place as stated by current government legislation.

Mandatory learning outcomes
All learners who enrol upon this course will need to complete these mandatory units. These units are standard to every learner, regardless of their pathway choice. These units will help the learner:

  • Use and develop systems that promote communication
  • Promote professional development
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Develop health & safety & risk management policies, procedures and practices in health & social care or children & young people’s settings.
  • Work in partnership in health and social care or children & young people’s settings.
  • Undertake a research project within service for health and social care or children and young people.

Pathway choices
When a learner enrols on the course, they will also have to choose a pathway that is most applicable to their working environment. The pathways we offer are:

Pathway B – Children and young people residential
This course is ideal for learners who work with children and young people in a residential environment (such as a care home). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, safeguarding children and young people, and how to assess an individual in a health and social care setting.

Pathway E – Adult residential
This course is ideal for learners who work with adult learners in a residential environment (such as an elderly care home). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, protecting vulnerable adults and managing group living for adults.

Pathway F – Adult non-residential
This course is ideal for learners who work with adults in a non-residential environment (such as a day care service). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, lead active support and develop procedures and practice to respond to concerns and complaints.

During the course of the qualification the candidate must work with at least two service users. A range of assessment methods will be used by the assessor including examining work products and expert witness testimonies and direct observation. Knowledge based units will be assessed using a range of methods including reflective accounts, projects, assignments, assessor questions and professional discussions. Candidates will have full access to assessor support via telephone, email, Skype and web links.
